I have experimented with turning my great great grandmother's story into a film once before this, in a much different and more narrative style. However this film, featuring a call with my mother, has become my favourite version. The way she told this story is exactly how I remember hearing it as a child, and the found footage of an idealised American family serves as a juxtaposition. It's particularly poignant to me that my Mother and I use this story to connect, given the relationships between mother and child that have existed in our family.
