This animated short tells the story of two girls from Southern China in the Guangdong province during the early 20th Century. Chen Ju (晨菊) is a Han girl who binds her feet in secret after the practice was banned in 1912. Ren Lian (仁莲) is a Hakka girl who is hired to be a playmate and attendant for Chen Ju as she undergoes the early stages of foot binding. Upon first meeting, both girls pity each other, but as they get to know each other they become fast friends and grow to admire the other for their grit and strength.  In this story I want to communicate the immense strength required by both women to survive on the path they have each chosen. This animated short is an exploration of my own culture and the experiences of women throughout history that continue to shape me to this day. It celebrates womanhood and the ties of friendship and solidarity that bind us together.
