The Room at the Back
As in most traditional Chinese families, my grandparents came to live with me as they grew older and needed more care. My maternal grandfather stayed in our guest room, at the back of the house for many years. While he was with us, he slowly deteriorated from early to late stage dementia. For a long time, I remember feeling an acute discomfort and fear when I passed by his door. The disease changed him in unrecognisable ways, and I watched as my mother became more and more exhausted from the effort of caring for him. This animated short attempts to capture some of the horror of dementia, as well as the discomfort and strain that it places on other relationships in the family. In this piece I used real audio from my maternal grandfather, as a way of grounding my work in my lived reality.
